How do I know it's the alternator and not the battery?
A battery light while driving, headlights that dim and brighten with engine speed, or a car that dies again shortly after a jump start all point at the alternator. We test to confirm.
Can you replace it on the roadside?
Usually, as long as the spot is safe to work in. A parking lot or driveway is fine; a narrow shoulder in live traffic is not.
