Squeaking or grinding brakes — when does it happen?

Most people describe a brake noise by what it sounds like. It's far more useful to notice when it happens.

What the symptom usually means

Usually a light coat of surface rust forming overnight in Tampa's humidity and scraping off. If it disappears after a few stops, it's normal.

The wear indicator touching the rotor. The pads are nearly done. Plan to replace them in the next couple of weeks.

The pad material is worn through and metal is contacting the rotor. Braking is already compromised and the rotors are being damaged with every trip.

Often a loose component, a dragging caliper or debris caught between the rotor and the shield. Worth checking before it becomes something bigger.

A soft, sinking or pulsing pedal is a separate problem from worn pads — air, a leak, or warped rotors. Don't wait on a pedal that feels wrong.

Grinding means the cheap repair window has already passed. Every day adds rotor cost.
